The Fun-Jitsu Curriculum

As the name implies, our program focuses on teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu self-defense to children through games and other fun activities.  Please note:  we are not a kid’s “MMA” school!  Although BJJ is famous for its submission techniques, we do not teach our Junior or Intermediate students (i.e., below 15) how to hurt or submit their opponents with choke holds, strikes or any other technique.

All classes are structured around a specific self-defense technique or scenario that a child might realistically encounter.  In addition to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu self defense techniques, we also teach kids Judo and Wrestling techniques.

The techniques taught in the Fun-Jitsu Self Defense Curriculum are the core of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and are all based on the self-defense lessons taught by Grand Master Helio Gracie and the Gracie Family.  All students, regardless of age, will be taught the following self-defense techniques:

  • Closing Distance and Basic Clinch Defenses Against Standing Strikes
  • Defenses Against Common Wrestling and Judo Throws and Takedowns
  • Escapes from Standing and Ground Headlocks
  • Escapes from Standing and Ground Chokes
  • Escapes from Front and Rear Bear Hugs
  • Escapes from Standing Holds
  • Defenses, Escapes and Reversals from Mounted and Cross-Side Positions
  • Defenses and Reversals from Guard Position
  • Attaining and Maintaining Mounted Position

Juniors Program (Ages 5-10)

The Juniors Program is designed to introduce and develop the fundamental physical, mental and emotional skills necessary to succeed at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Classes focus on posture, balance, coordination, movement, body awareness and control, strength and flexibility.

Because much of the class time is spent on games and other fun activities, it may not always be obvious that your child is learning BJJ, but rest assured that every game and activity is specifically designed to develop critical skills that are necessary to excel at BJJ.

As with all of our classes, each class will include instruction on defending against one or more realistic self-defense scenarios.

Intermediate Program (Ages 11-15)

The Intermediate Program contains instruction on all of the self-defense techniques listed above and introduces children to more advanced BJJ techniques and concepts.  In particular, the Intermediate Program teaches students common Wrestling takedowns and Judo throws, advanced defensive guard variations and additional methods for controlling an opponent on the ground.

Advanced Program (Ages 16-18)

The Advance Program is for teens who wish to learn BJJ self-defense concepts as well as the full scope of BJJ positional and submission skills.
